Tehran, October 2022: During rehearsals for a production of Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata”, protests break out on the streets of Tehran and security forces take action. The director and actors have to react – should they stop rehearsals, open the doors, fight alongside the people? Conflicting feelings erupt, fronts and alliances form. Based on real experiences, Najafi staged “The Sun will Rise” with the participants of a theater workshop, which opened the “Venice Days” of the Venice Film Festival in 2023.

Followed by a discussion with the filmmaker Ayat Najafi!

Ayat Najafi (*1976 in Tehran) lives and works as a film and theater director and multimedia artist in Berlin. His research-oriented projects deal with topics such as gender equality, human rights, intercultural dialog and ecological issues.
