Reyhaneh Jabbari was sentenced to death in 2007 for stabbing the perpetrator in self-defense during an attempted rape. Seven years later, the sentence was carried out. Steffi Niederzoll reconstructs the tragic case of the 19-year-old on the basis of video recordings, statements and memories of relatives and fellow prisoners, as well as personal letters written by Reyhaneh Jabbari in Gohardasht prison in Karadj.

Her mother Shohle Pakravan has processed the case together with the filmmaker in the book “How to Become a Butterfly”, which she will present on June 7 at the Literaturhaus, and then on Friday evening both will be guests for a film discussion.

“Seven Winters in Tehran” was awarded the Friedensfilmpreis at the Berlinale 2023 as well as best film in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section (Kompass Perspective Film Prize).
