Rona and Hamed, a young Afghan couple, arrive illegally by bus in Tehran. From there they want to flee to Europe in the hope of a better life. Hamid finds accommodation in the flat of an Afghan friend who wants to continue west via Turkey. But to be recognised as refugees, they need a reason – such as the forbidden conversion from Islam to Christianity. In the meantime, Hamed has lost sight of Rona and is looking for her …

Director

Navid Mahmoudi (*1980 in Parvan/Afghanistan) moved to Iran with his family when he was six years old. He developed a passion for films and cinema at an early age. He began his professional career as an assistant director, producer and with his own short films. In 2014, he produced his first feature film “A Few Cubic Meters of Love”, which was enthusiastically received by both international critics and audiences. In 2016, he directed his first feature film “Parting ” before producing “Rona, Azim’s Mother” in 2018. All three films were selected as Afghanistan’s official Oscar entries.
