Roya, a teacher, is imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin Prison because of her political beliefs. There, she is faced with an inhuman choice: either she makes a forced confession on television or she remains locked up in her tiny isolation cell. When she is granted a short-term leave of absence due to a death in the family, she has three days to decide her fate.
In “Roya”, director Mahnaz Mohammadi draws on her own experiences of imprisonment and isolation. The film powerfully explores how psychological pressure, control and fear affect perception, self-esteem and interpersonal relationships.
Followed by a discussion with director Mahnaz Mohammadi.
