In order to raise the money to marry his beloved Narges, young Amir hires out to fishermen on the rough coast of the Caspian Sea. Gradually he wins respect and his place there, but soon he is drawn into the criminal milieu of illegal caviar poaching.

The German-produced debut film (Arte, ZDF, Basis Film, Living Pictures Production) of Berlin-based Karamizade shows us the fascinating landscape of the Caspian Sea in the north of the vast country of Iran, rarely shown in cinema; for its visual and narrative power, “Empty Nets” received the “Special Jury Award” in Karlovy Vary.

Filmmaker Behrooz Karamizade will be present for the audience discussion!

Afterwards there will be an expert discussion on the situation of the Caspian Sea.

Director

Behrooz Karamizade (*1978 in Ahvaz) has lived in Germany since 1985; he studied at the Kassel University of the Arts in the Visual Communication department, specializing in film and television. His short films (“Bahar in Wonderland”, 2013) have won several international awards, including at the Rotterdam Film Festival, the Oberhausen Short Film Festival and the Montreal World Film Festival.
